The town of Caserta is known As the "Versailles of Naples" because of the Royal Palace built Here by the Bourbon King, Charles the third in the 18th century. The marvellous palace overlooking the huge square is one of the most sumptuous buildings of its kind in Italy.
It has more than 1.200 rooms and is full of chandeliers, richly gilded frescoes, tapestries and history.
In 1945 it was the headquarters of the Supreme Command of the Allied Forces in the Mediterranean territory. The extraordinary gardens are long 1.5 miles and their crowing glory is the great cascade, a 75 metres high waterfall which can be seen from a window of the palace. After the splendor of the Royal Palace, we go visit Monte Cassino to the famous Abbey, which was founded in 529 by St. Benedict of Norcia.
During the world war II the Abbey was completely destroyed and has since been faithfully restored to its former glory, with even the original frescoes and mosaic pieced together again.
To plan your excursion, you need probably more details about those places. You can find them on Caserta and Cassino web sites.
